City to designate Gentry Lane as school street to improve student safety
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 3, 2026
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The City of Charlottesville will designate the school-owned section of Gentry Lane near the Charlottesville Early Learning Center, formerly Walker Upper Elementary School, as a School Street this fall.
The change will restrict general through-traffic to create a safer environment for students, families, and staff, though nearby residents will retain driveway access and emergency responders, delivery drivers, and City utility vehicles will maintain access. Please note that Charlottesville Area Transit’s Bus Route 9 will continue operating on its existing alignment. Changes to the route could take place as early as mid-December 2026, with a final date to be announced.
Temporary barriers will create single-lane entrances and exits, with permanent barriers expected in late fall. Drivers must travel slowly and yield to pedestrians and cyclists, and new no-parking signs will be installed near the barriers.
Public open house
The City of Charlottesville and Charlottesville City Schools will host an open house on Monday, November 16, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Charlottesville Early Learning Center (1564 Dairy Road). Community members can meet with project staff, review access maps, and ask questions before implementation begins.
