Charlottesville City Schools students enjoy the city’s first electric school buses
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The City of Charlottesville and Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) are pleased to announce that the first two battery electric school buses (ESBs) are now an integrated part of the City’s pupil transportation fleet, marking an important step forward in the City’s commitment to cleaner transportation. Charlottesville City Schools students have been catching a ride to school on the new buses since January.
“Sustainability and environmental awareness are priorities for Charlottesville City Schools,” said Charlottesville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Royal Gurley. “We’re very proud to be working with the City to get children to and from school without fossil fuels.”
Charlottesville was able to integrate ESBs into the fleet through funding assistance from two partners. The City received $409,968 through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus program to purchase the buses. We also participated in Dominion Energy’s Electric School Bus Infrastructure program, which provided chargers for the new school buses.
“We’re thrilled to have these electric buses serving Charlottesville students,” said Tray Biasiolli, climate program specialist with the City. “These buses have no tailpipe emissions, so it’s much healthier for the students and drivers.” To learn more and see a video of the electric school buses in action, check out this video!
