CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Charlottesville Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred early this morning on the Downtown Mall.
At approximately 1:53 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of E. Main Street at 3rd Street SE for a large disorder involving approximately 10 people. Minutes later, at approximately 1:58 a.m., officers received additional calls reporting shots fired in the area.
Detectives were called in, and as part of their preliminary investigation reviewed multiple angles of surveillance video from the Downtown Mall. The footage shows a suspect moving in and out of camera view during the disorder. At one point, the suspect is seen displaying a firearm before concealing it. The suspect is then seen walking backward westbound on the Mall, pointing a firearm eastbound, and firing shots near CVS before turning and running south toward Water Street.
The suspect is described as wearing a black hoodie with white writing on the front, light blue jeans, and white sneakers.
Crime scene investigators recovered seven 9mm cartridge casings from the scene. Some property damage to a nearby business occurred as a result of the shooting.
