CPD identifies suspect in Madison Avenue shooting; search continues for second suspect

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Charlottesville Police Department (CPD) is investigating a shooting that occurred at a residence in the 700 block of Madison Avenue at approximately 5:00 a.m. this morning.
Based on preliminary information, two individuals entered the apartment through an upstairs balcony, where gunfire was exchanged between the resident and the two intruders. The resident was not injured.
Shortly after the incident, a man arrived at Augusta Medical Center with a gunshot wound. He has been identified as 20-year-old Brian Baker Jr. Charges of breaking and entering while armed are forthcoming.
Detectives are actively searching for the second suspect; a description will be released once more information is obtained.
During the exchange of gunfire, a gas line was struck, and the Oxford Hill apartment complex was evacuated as a precaution. The line has since been secured, and residents have been allowed to return to their homes. We thank them for their patience and cooperation.
