There were many tense moments at the Rapidan Service Authority (RSA) Board of Members meeting Thursday, Aug. 20 surrounding a proposed water rate increase, improvements for Stanardsville’s water supply and the plan for a 50-year water supply plan for Greene County.

Since the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Rapidan Service Authority (RSA) Board of Members has suspended disconnecting service for nonpayment and the board agreed to extend that to the end of September, as well as waiving late fees and disconnection fees. However, some customers have amassed a large debt that might be difficult to pay once that goes into effect again.

Essentially calling the proposed ban before them “the wrong tool for the job,” the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously last Tuesday against banning through-truck traffic on Route 615 and instead pledged to work toward a solution to “make everyone happy.” 

Orange County is considering an ordinance that would require property owners operating short-term rentals to register with the county and both collect and pay the related transient occupancy tax. 

With the state budget finally signed by Gov. Ralph Northam, the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to appropriate the county’s $104 million fiscal year 2019 budget, an action which was deferred until the county knew what state funds it would receive. 

Orange County’s first large-scale solar farm has been approved. Last week, supervisors voted unanimously in favor of a special-use permit which would allow a 400-acre, 60-megawatt solar farm to be built along Route 20, just a mile from Locust Grove Primary School.

Gordonsville was fired up with excitement Saturday, as the community celebrated the 100th birthday of the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company.

Orange County residents voted on 11 uncontested candidates Tuesday, including four constitutional seats, two county supervisors and three school board representatives. 

Election Day is less than a week away. While local voters will elect a 17th District senator and 30th District delegate, county residents will vote in six constitutional elections and for supervisors and school board representatives in three districts.
