The lawsuit alleged that six city police officers violated LaQuinn Gilmore's First, Fourth and 14th Amendment rights when he was thrown to the ground and injured during the Jan. 11, 2021 incident.

If state prison officials are censoring inmate letters as claimed, then they’re violating the U.S. Constitution and must be stopped. Local lawyer and activist Jeff Fogel says that’s exactly what’s happening, and has filed a suit against officials on behalf of an inmate who says his criticisms about the prison were blocked.

The irony wasn’t lost on us when critics complained that an unexpected police presentation on “stop-and-frisk” data took up too much time at a recent Charlottesville City Council meeting. Two different demands by city activists came into conflict at that moment.

Many of the items on the agenda, such as electing officers and voting on a mission statement, were tabled until the next meeting, given the limited time left following the city attorney's presentation.
