In a recent voter guide for Albemarle County’s Samuel Miller District, write-in candidate Zackrisson showed why voters must remember to check the box for Graham Paige instead for the county School Board.
Zackrisson was quoted as saying, “I’m not a zealot. I don’t have any axes to grind; I just want kids to get educated like I was educated.”
I don't want kids to get educated like I was, and neither should you. I got a great education in K-12 and in college and graduate school. But the excellent education I got prepared me to be in the middle of my career in 2021, not to be starting my career right now.
There are so many things that kids today need to know for their adulthood that I did not need to know. And so many things I learned how to do that are utterly useless now. I learned how to look up words in a hardcover dictionary. Now, my son searches out definitions on dictionary.com.
I learned geography that is no longer accurate. I learned that Pluto is a planet. I learned about DNA before we'd mapped the human genome. I learned to drive with my hands at 10 and 2. Now, because of airbags, you are supposed to put your hands at 8 and 4 and to steer during turns from the bottom of the steering wheel and not do hand over hand.
I am glad that the movies and books and television shows of my generation are now recognized for their racism, sexism and homophobia. Our children are better, more empathetic people than their parents are because of their exposure to diverse people and viewpoints.
I want board members who know that the world changes and that learning is a lifelong process. That it is not a set of skills and facts to memorize that will serve you for the rest of your life, but a way to grow and change as you bring new information into your world.
Vote for the School Board member who embraces change and lifelong learning. Check the box on your ballot for Graham Paige.
