A Rhode Island dog whose inspiring story of going from shelter dog to life-saving police K-9 became the subject of a recent Netflix movie has been euthanized. State Police said Sunday K-9 Ruby was put down Friday following a “sudden, acute, and untreatable illness.” She was 11 years old. The superintendent of the state police expressed gratitude for K-9 Ruby’s years of service. In 2017, she gained notoriety after locating a teenage boy who was severely injured while hiking in the woods. The boy was the son of the shelter worker who advocated for her. Her story was made into the 2022 Netflix movie “Rescued by Ruby.”
Doctor Strange and his multiverse got to linger a little longer atop the weekend box office while Tom Cruise waits in the wings. Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was the top-earning film of the weekend for the third straight week, bringing in $31.6 million in North American theaters. “Downtown Abbey: A New Era” made a strong showing in second place with $16 million, but there was no real blockbuster competition for “Doctor Strange," which surpassed the $800 million mark to become the year's top grossing film. Next week, “Top Gun: Maverick" arrives on a wave of hype for Memorial Day weekend.
Rob Reiner is getting the band back together. Reiner is at the Cannes Film Festival for anniversary screening on the beach of “This Is Spinal Tap” and to drum up excitement for the just-announced sequel that will also see Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Christopher Guest reprise their roles as band members David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls and Nigel Tufnel. In an interview, Reiner acknowledges “the bar is high" for a “Spinal Tap” nearly 40 years after the original. But he's hoping the comedy cult classic, like the band's amps, goes up to 11. And he's planning to do it just like the original — improvised and without a script.

Jurors in Johnny Depp’s libel trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard were shown photos of her with red marks and swelling on her face after their final fight before their divorce. Heard was back on the witness stand Monday for a third day of testimony in a libel suit filed against her by Depp. The high-profile trial is resuming after a one-week hiatus. She testified Monday about the final fight before she filed for divorce, and jurors saw the clearest photos yet of red marks and swelling on her face after the fight. Depp is suing Heard for libel over an op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post describing herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.”
Amber Heard's sister has testified she personally witnessed Johnny Depp and Heard strike each other during a fight. Whitney Heard Henriquez became the first witness to testify during the five-week trial that she personally witnessed Depp hitting Heard. Depp has said he never struck Heard at any time. But on Wednesday, Henriquez said both Depp and Heard landed blows in a March 2015 fight. A friend of Heard's also testified Wednesday that she saw cuts and bruises on Heard that resulted from Depp's assaults. Depp is suing Heard for libel in Fairfax, Virginia, over a 2018 op-ed she wrote describing herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.”
