On the weekend of Nov. 17-18, an Under-13 SOKS (Scottsville Organization for Kids Sports) girls’ soccer team traveled to Chantilly to play in the 2012 All-Star Cup in Herndon soccer tournament. All of the other teams in the tournament were from Northern Virginia, and were from larger soccer organizations than SOKS. On Nov. 17, the girls played four mini-games, and ended up with two ties and two losses. They ended up seeded seventh of eight teams. On Sunday, they beat the number 2 seed from Herndon in a thrilling tie-breaker shootout (penalty kicks), and won their semi-final match against Sterling 4-1. They ultimately lost in the championship 4-0, but ended up with second-place trophies for the amazing efforts. This group of girls, who had only practiced together twice prior to the tournament, showed a lot of heart, teamwork and determination and beat huge odds to finish so well against teams that have played together all season or were all-star teams that drew players from many more teams than SOKS. It was an incredible experience for our team and for our organization!
