McLearen, Patterson state medalist honors

Kate McLearen and Abby Patterson post with their state medals after the last week’s VHSL state race in Salem.

Junior Lady Mountaineer Cross Country runners Kate McLearen and Abigail Patterson competed last week in the VHSL State Cross Country Championship race in Salem. Even without their teammates this year, the ladies capped their stellar seasons in style by both claiming state medal honors on the blustery, cool day. McLearen, the 2020-21 Bull Run District champ and Region B champ turned in a great performance running a personal best of 19:30 on the 5k course and finished 3rd overall to claim All-State honors. McLearen went back and forth with senior Katie Benson from Graham High School throughout the race with Benson pulling away at the end to claim runner-up honors. Carly Wilkes from Glenvar High school won the race in an incredible time of 18:13. Madison’s Abby Patterson also ran another great race finishing 13th overall in 21:43 to claim state medalist honors.

Boys team

The Boy’s Cross Country team completed their successful season last week returning to Salem for the second year in a row to run in the VHSL State Championship Race. The team went into the meet on a roll after recently claiming the Bull Run District Championship and Region B Runner-Up honors. After spending much of the day waiting on the bus for their race to start, the boys finally hit the starting line. The Mountaineers were led by freshman Troy Miller who capped his great inaugural season as a Varsity runner finishing 19th overall in a speedy 18:19. Senior Mitchell Dyer closed out his Mountaineer Cross Country career with a 25th place finish in 18:33. He was followed by fellow Senior Isaiah Batman in 29th at 18:47, Junior Luke Beeler in 34th at 19:01, Scout Foskett (49th, 20:14), Austin Hamilton (53rd, 20:30), and Jose Hidalgo (55th, 20:47). The Mountaineers scored a team total of 116 finishing 4th out of the 8 teams that qualified to run in the Championship race. The was the highest finish for the boys cross country program in quite some time Alleghany High School won the team championship with the low score of 42 points. Coaches Allan McLearen and Aaron Cook were very pleased with the Boys team on this day and their many accomplishments throughout the season.
