Change coming to MCHS

A change in administration is coming to Madison County High School.

In a surprise move, school board members voted last week to reassign principal Gary Wintersgill to an alternative education teaching position effective Aug. 5. The change was in the form of an addendum to the May personnel matters during last week’s school board meeting. Personnel matters are discussed in closed session before being voted on collectively in open session. Specifics are not named, but the actions are posted to the school board website in the days following a meeting. As of Tuesday, no formal announcement has been made by school officials. Meanwhile, the open position was posted to the online vacancy listing May 14, the day after the meeting.

School board member Barry Penn Hollar declined to comment on the reason for the change, noting only that it was recommended by the superintendent and approved by the board from which Karen Allen was absent and new interim board member Kathy McGhee had not been sworn in yet.

Wintersgill said he had no previous knowledge the change was coming or even discussed. He said he wasn’t informed of any concerns prior to the decision; something he would think would be done in a professional setting. Wintersgill is completing his fifth year at the school having accepted the position in April 2014 with employment beginning July 1, 2014. He came to Madison from Spotsylvania County where he was an assistant principal at Massaponax High School.

He did not say if he plans to take the alternative education teaching position.

“I’m keeping all my options open,” he said.

Wintersgill said he has nothing but support for his students.

“I want the best for the students and I wish them all the success they can achieve.”

Meanwhile, superintendent Anna Graham said Wintersgill will remain the principal through June 30. She said a panel of teachers, parents and central office staff is being formed to review applications and conduct interviews for the position.

“Our goal is to have the position filled by the end of June so the candidate can start on July 1,” she said.

Penn Hollar said he wasn’t sure if an internal hire would be considered.

“We’re looking for the best person for the job,” he said.

The job listing is active online through May 28.
