Primal Strength Gym in Charlottesville hosted the Greene County Strongman 2021 competition at the United Christian Academy in Ruckersville on Saturday, July 10. The event had two goals: raise funds for the Greene County Sheriff’s Office sex crimes unit and to promote health and fitness to the community. Each year at the Greene County Fair in the 1980s and 1990s, the Strongman competition would be very popular with spectators. David Roach Jr., who helped coordinate the event, grew up in Greene County and remembers his father placing numerous times. In fact, the sheriff’s office at that time had a weightlifting team, as did William Monroe High School, and they would compete at events throughout the state. The atmosphere from the participants and the spectators on Saturday was incredibly positive—cheering each other on throughout each event.
