LEXINGTON — A project which has been in the works for several years came to fruition Friday when it was announced that the Rockbridge Rapids would become the Valley Baseball League’s 12th franchise at ceremonies held at Washington and Lee’s Cap’n Dick Smith Field.

Just recently, lights were installed at the college field, which will allow the Rapids to begin play in the VBL in 2009.

Since Faquier joined the league, a need for a 12th team has had league officials searching for the way to put together another franchise.

“It will be very nice for scheduling,” said league president Dave Biery. “As it stands now, one team has to sit out every night. We’re happy to be awarding membership to the Rapids.”

Waynesboro owner and president Jim Critzer said that the addition of the Rapids will help his club and the rest of the Valley League.

“It’s going to round out the Valley League to 12 teams and it should help us schedule,” he said.

The Rapids will join the South Division of the League which presently includes Covington, Waynesboro, Staunton, Harrisonburg and New Market.

“Next month, the league owners will sit down and go over possible scheduling scenarios,” said league treasurer Jim Phillips, who is in charge of putting the schedule together.

“We’re excited to get a franchise in here and look forward to providing fun family entertainment with the emphasis on fun,” said Rapids president Jim Crothers.

The Valley Baseball League began in 1923 and is in its 16th year as a wooden bat league.

Like the other existing teams in the league, the Rapids will recruit approximately 25 players who have completed at least one year of college with eligibility remaining.

The Rapids’ location provides an important geographic link between Covington, the southernmost franchise, and the Staunton Braves and Waynesboro Generals.
